Hanamaruki is a maker of miso, a traditional Japanese condiment. The company's beginnings date back to November 1918, when the first president, Kaneharu Hanaoka, started a miso-making business in Ina City, Nagano Prefecture. He used the brand "Maruki-jirushi".
The following year, he began selling Shinshu miso at a store in Tokyo. In 1964, the brand was changed to Hanamaruki. Sales extended from Tokyo to Osaka and its surrounding cities, to the Chugoku and Shikoku regions, and throughout Japan. Hanamaruki products quickly became known to everyone.
In 1983, the company adopted a new logo and became Hanamaruki Foods Inc. In 1997, the company was the official miso supplier for the Nagano Olympic Games. Today, the name Hanamaruki is synonymous with miso.
